Darlene Circle is a teacher at UCF, the University of Central Florida. Essentials for Teaching Reading is the result of her 30 years of teaching experience with students from kindergarten to college.
Supported by a solid knowledge on pedagogy, “Essentials for Teaching Reading” integrates
teaching theories with her practical expertise.
Darlene wrote the book with the intention
to serve those who, like her,
are committing their life
to support people’s
growth through
education.
“I made
my first Reference
Cards over 30 years ago
while I was teaching first and second
grade. I created a set of cards on a ring
to remind myself about higher level questions,
Instructional strategies, and various phonic rules.
Over time, I refined these cards and developed more
as I taught third and fourth grade. Teaching on the
University of Central Florida over the past 8 years, I
created new cards dedicated to my University students.
These became a “gift of time” for them as well as a companion reference to be used
when actually planning and teaching in the elementary classroom. With “ESSENTIALS,”
I am happy to provide support and encouragement to teachers and teachers-
